The cannabis recall process plays an important role in ensuring defective or potentially unsafe products are removed from the commercial market. There are two types of recalls: mandatory recalls, which are ordered by the Department, and voluntary recalls, which are conducted by the cannabis business.

About the recall process
The cannabis recall process plays an important role in ensuring defective or potentially unsafe products are removed from the commercial market.
Mandatory recalls
- Occurs when there is an immediate and serious threat to human life or health, and other remedies would cause an unreasonable delay.
- Initiated and ordered by DCC.
- DCC notifies licensees that a mandatory recall is being ordered.
- Licensee(s) are required to immediately cease distribution and recall the cannabis or cannabis product from the commercial supply chain.
- DCC posts the recall information to the list of mandatory recalls on its website and sends a consumer advisory to provide information to licensees and consumers about the recall.
- DCC works with licensees to ensure the recalled cannabis and cannabis products are properly handled, remediated, and/or disposed of.
Voluntary recalls
- Occurs when the licensee identifies that their product is mislabeled, defective, or unsafe for consumption (adulterated or misbranded).
- Initiated and implemented by the licensee.
- The licensee notifies DCC that they are initiating a recall.
- DCC posts the recall information to the list of voluntary recalls on its website and sends a consumer advisory to provide information to licensees and consumers about the recall.
- DCC works with licensees to ensure the recalled cannabis and cannabis products are properly handled, remediated, and/or disposed of.
